community fridge movement

Better Block SGF’s community fridges are part of a global movement to promote equal access to fresh food and reduce food waste. Donations of produce, dairy and meat, as well as non-perishable items, are welcome. Help us keep them fully stocked by taking food directly to the fridges — they’re accessible 24/7.
KNOW BEFORE YOU GO.
URBAN ROOTS FARM
823 W State Street
Better Block SGF’s first community fridge was a grassroots response to the ongoing food-insecurity crisis caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. The installation was designed by students from Drury University’s Hammons School of Architecture (HSA) for our We Create 2022 competition. It was built in 2023 with the help of HSA students, West Central Neighborhood residents and the Urban Roots Farm owners. The fridge is maintained by Better Block SGF and Springfield Community Gardens staff and volunteers.
THE FAIRBANKS
1126 N Broadway Avenue
Better Block SGF is excited to announce a second community fridge slated for spring 2025 at The Fairbanks, home of the Drew Lewis Foundation, in the Grant Beach Neighborhood. Contact Better Block SGF if you or your organization would like to collaborate on this installation.
