The South Avenue Placemaking Demonstration created an opportunity for the Springfield community to experience a reimagined block of South Avenue that promotes pedestrian activity, support for local economy, safety, social connection and a quality urban experience.

The 10-day demonstration included a mid-block crosswalk, wider sidewalks, potted trees, benches, cafe seating and art installations. A block of South Avenue was closed to traffic for the kickoff, which featured live music, yard games and other interactive activities.
